Get in to the Groove – Check your tyres!

Did you know that one in five drivers has never checked their tyres? :O 

National Tyre Safety Month 2018 takes place this October, with the key message to all drivers is to get in to the habit of checking all your vehicle’s tyres at least once a month.  The awareness month has been put together by Tyre Safe, the UK’s charity dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of correct tyre maintenance and the dangers of defective and illegal tyres.  

Since its inception, TyreSafe’s activities have helped reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured each year in a tyre related accident by 46%.

Drivers who are found with illegal tyres are now imposed with a £2,500 fine and three-point penalty, and more importantly, have increased chances of being involved in an accident on the road.

Poorly aligned tyres can affect road holding and decrease the life of your tyres so its really important to get your tracking checked. 

How to check your tread

A good way to check your tyres tread is to use the 20p test. 

Place a 20p in the tread channels/grooves around the tyre. If you can see the outer band of the coin when it’s being placed in the the grooves it means the tyre tread is too shallow and likely to be illegal. Check various points around the tyre to ensure the whole tyre is checked thoroughly.

This needs to be done at least once a month and especially before long journeys so you can make sure your tyres are safe and roadworthy.
